HubSpot Faces Controversy Over AI Data Sharing
HubSpot found itself in the middle of a storm after announcing a change that did not sit well. The company decided to automatically enroll its customers in a data sharing initiative, which sparked a fierce reaction from the community. The proposal was to allow customer enrichment data to be shared between accounts unless customers opted out manually. But within days, the pressure was so great that HubSpot reversed its decision and apologized.
The idea was to expand the functionalities of data discovery and intelligence, promising more robust and reliable information. For this, business contact details, employer information, and email delivery signals could be shared. The company assured that customers would have "full control" over their settings, but for many, this sounded more like a trap. Those who did not want to participate would have to disable the use of data for AI model training by August 4.
The Community's Reaction Was Immediate
The community did not stay silent. Saarika Chotai, an influential figure in the B2B world, shared an email detailing the change and highlighted what she considered a breach of trust. She pointed out that suddenly, "your data" was becoming "our data" from HubSpot's perspective. This sparked a heated debate about the ethics behind opt-out policies, which often take advantage of customers' inertia or inattention.
Dharmesh Shah, founder and CTO of HubSpot, was quick to respond. He acknowledged the mistake and announced the reversal of the decision. Duncan Lennox, Chief Product and Technology Officer, also spoke out, emphasizing that the intention was to improve accuracy and outcomes for everyone, but they failed to be transparent. The change felt like a betrayal, altering the relationship customers had with their CRM.
Transparency Is the Watchword
This situation is not exclusive to HubSpot. Salesforce has also faced criticism for trying to be more transparent about its data settings. The lesson here is clear: transparency and active consent are essential
