US Congress Faces Avalanche of AI-Generated Bills
The United States Congress is dealing with a new challenge: the flood of bills generated by artificial intelligence. It seems that the technology, which promised efficiency and innovation, is creating more problems than solutions. Legislative consultants have reported that many of these documents arrive filled with errors and incorrect information, which has delayed the already complex legislative process.
The numbers are impressive. The use of AI has increased the volume of bills submitted for review by 70% compared to the previous year. This means that consultants are overwhelmed with a massive amount of texts that often lack depth and accuracy. It’s as if AI is generating a sea of paperwork that, instead of helping, only hinders.
AI: A Double-Edged Sword
The problems do not stop at basic writing errors or the so-called "hallucinations" of AIs. Wade Ballou, former head of the US House Office of Legislative Counsel, highlighted that fundamental issues, such as the definition of basic terms and types of public funding, are being treated superficially. This raises a troubling question: to what extent do lawmakers and their aides truly understand what they are proposing?
Excessive automation may be creating a generation of legislators who do not have a full understanding of the bills they are presenting. And this poses a huge risk to the quality of the laws governing the country. Technology should be an ally, but in this case, it seems to be becoming an obstacle.
The Solution May Lie in AI Itself
Interestingly, the solution to this problem may also come from artificial intelligence. Consultants are using a tool called Comparative Print Suite, which compares bills with existing legislation. This tool helps identify evolutions and possible modifications, bringing a bit more clarity and precision to the legislative process.
But it’s not just Congress facing the so-called "AI Slop." Online platforms are also taking measures to combat the circulation of superficial content generated by AI. LinkedIn, for example, is implementing ways to report posts clearly created by artificial intelligence, thus trying to maintain the quality of content on its network.
A Necessary Warning
What we are seeing is a clear example of how technology, when misused, can generate more problems than solutions. The US Congress is learning the hard way that AI, while powerful, needs to be used with care and responsibility.
The lesson here is that it is not enough to adopt technology; it is necessary to know how to integrate it intelligently and effectively. Otherwise, we risk being buried under a sea of superficial and inaccurate information that confuses more than it clarifies. Artificial intelligence has incredible potential, but like any powerful tool, it must be used wisely.
