Young Hollywood filmmakers showcase the Generation Z dilemma with AI
The youngest filmmakers in Hollywood are exposing a critical issue for Generation Z: the complicated relationship with artificial intelligence. During graduation ceremonies, students from the University of Central Florida and the University of Arizona did not hesitate to boo speakers who mentioned AI. This reflects a distrust of technology that, while dominated by them, is viewed with skepticism. Trust in AI among young people aged 18 to 29 has dropped drastically, with only 43% believing it is a good time to find a job, a sharp decline from 2022.
Hollywood and the creative economy are at the center of this tension. Three filmmakers, Curry Barker, Markiplier, and Kane Parsons, are challenging the status quo. Barker, at just 26 years old, directed "Obsession" with a modest budget, but the film grossed over $300 million worldwide. Markiplier, in turn, released "Iron Lung" without traditional marketing support, and the film earned over $40 million in its first month. Meanwhile, Kane Parsons, at 20 years old, adapted an urban legend for the cinema, becoming the youngest filmmaker to top the box office in North America.
These young talents did not follow the traditional studio path but instead built their audiences through community work and low-budget projects. Barker emphasized that creative freedom was essential to his success. The lesson Hollywood should learn is not to replicate formulas but to value authenticity and creative risk, elements that automation tends to eliminate.
The platform that wants to dominate everything
Meanwhile, TikTok launched AI Cast, a feature that allows creators to generate digital avatars for their videos. With just a few prompts, content is produced automatically. This is just part of the ByteDance ecosystem, which includes video automation and content generation from text. The question many in Generation Z are raising is: if the creator's presence and judgment are no longer necessary, what is really being valued?
Brands and creators face a dilemma: embrace the efficiency of new tools or preserve the authenticity that resonates with the audience. Data indicates that the audience values what cannot be standardized.
