Anthropic redefines the game with Claude Cowork for mobile and web
Anthropic has just taken a bold step by launching Claude Cowork for mobile and web. The idea is clear: to reach an audience far beyond developers. Usage data does not lie. Most users are not programming. They are using Cowork for tasks that revolve around work but are not work itself. It’s about gathering scattered updates into a single report or creating onboarding checklists.
This strategic move transforms Cowork from a desktop-restricted agent into a cross-device platform. You start a task on your laptop, it continues on its own in the background, and you review everything on your phone. And all this even after closing the app. "Your work goes with you wherever you go and continues without you," says Anthropic.
What the numbers reveal about Cowork usage
Data from 1.2 million sessions of Claude Cowork is revealing. Most people are not writing software. They are focused on business processes and operations. This represents 33.4% of the analyzed sessions. Content creation and copywriting come in second place, with 16.4%. Together, these two categories account for almost half of Cowork's usage. Meanwhile, software development represents only 8.7%.
Anthropic calls this "the work around work." These are tasks that appear in almost every role within an organization but are rarely in the job description. It’s as if AI is taking care of everything professionals do beyond their actual specialty.
Mobile access changes the game
The expansion to mobile and web adds three concrete capabilities. First, sessions now sync across devices. You start a task at your desk, check the progress on your phone, and get the final result from anywhere. Second, Cowork can perform tasks in the background without any device being online. Imagine programming a client prep for Monday morning: Claude works on emails, transcripts, and recent news, assembles the briefing document, and leaves the follow-up email ready for review.
