Sriram Krishnan steps down as AI advisor at the White House
Sriram Krishnan is leaving his post as artificial intelligence advisor at the White House. The former technology executive and venture capitalist announced he will leave the Trump administration at the end of June. In a post on the social network X, Krishnan expressed what a privilege it was to serve the American people and thanked them for the opportunity. He highlighted Trump's leadership as crucial to keeping the United States at the forefront of the AI race.
Krishnan, who held the role of senior AI policy advisor, was one of several tech industry names to join the second Trump administration. With a resume that includes stints at Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo, Facebook, and Snap, he was also a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm whose founders supported Trump in the 2024 elections.
In his post, Krishnan highlighted several major public accomplishments, starting with the administration's AI Action Plan, which prioritized building data centers over focusing on regulation and security. Since then, Trump has signed several AI-related executive orders, including one that challenges state regulations and another aimed at oversight, which was ultimately delayed and scaled back following industry pushback. Trump also supported the idea that the government could take equity stakes in major AI companies.
Krishnan mentioned working closely with David Sacks, the investor and podcaster who left his role as AI and crypto czar earlier this year to become co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Sacks' ongoing advocacy for the U.S. to lead in AI was highlighted by Krishnan as crucial.
Krishnan's next step will be to "build institutions" that tackle grand challenges for the U.S. and its allies. According to The Washington Post, he plans to start an external institution that will still allow him to influence Trump's AI policy. "Whether it's energy, data centers, or a clear path for Americans to experience the benefits of AI, there are many hard challenges we all need to tackle together," Krishnan stated.
