Twitch gives users the option to opt-out of Amazon's AI training
The relationship between Twitch and Amazon has always been somewhat curious. Now, the streaming platform has taken an important step: allowing its users to opt-out of having their content used to train Amazon's artificial intelligence models. This change comes more than two years after an executive from the company confirmed that Twitch content was being used for this purpose.
If you are a content creator on Twitch and do not want your streams, VODs, clips, chats, and even images and texts from your channel to be used to train Amazon's AI models, you can now opt-out. Just go to the settings at www.twitch.tv/settings/security and disable this option. It seems simple, but the issue is deeper.
The dilemma of automatic consent
The detail is that, by default, all Twitch users are automatically enrolled for their content to be used in AI training. This has been happening for some time, but only now has the opt-out option been formally presented. Mike Minton, former monetization director at Twitch, had already confirmed this practice at an event in 2024, highlighting that everything was within the bounds of user trust and privacy regulations.
But are users really aware of this? Recent online discussions suggest that many still do not know that their content is being used in this way. The lack of transparency and automatic enrollment are points that generate distrust. After all, no one likes to be caught off guard, especially when it comes to the use of their creative work.
The choice between control and collaboration
Some creators may not want their content used to train Amazon's AI for various reasons. It could be the lack of financial return, the fear that AI might end up cannibalizing their own business, or simply a resistance to the Amazon conglomerate. On the other hand, there are those who see value in contributing to the development of new technologies.
The important thing is that, now, users have more control over this decision. But the issue of automatic consent and transparency still leaves many with reservations. Amazon is not just using AI; it is using the content of millions of creators to fuel this machine.
In the end, this change on Twitch is a reminder that, in the digital world, control over our own content is a valuable currency. And, as always, it is up to us to decide how and when we want to spend it.
