New York Freezes Data Center Construction and Shakes the AI Sector
New York has decided to put a halt on data center construction for a year. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the moratorium, which is already causing a stir in the artificial intelligence sector. The decision affects data centers that consume 50 megawatts or more and will only be reversed when the state establishes consistent standards for the development of these centers. The concerns are significant: pollution, energy costs, and water scarcity are the main fears of the population.
Pressure to stop data center construction is growing in the United States. Even Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are trying to push legislation that would ban constructions nationwide. However, it is unlikely that Republicans will support this, especially with Donald Trump stating that it would jeopardize the U.S. leadership in the AI race. Nevertheless, politicians from all sides are treading carefully, fearing that their positions on data centers could cost them votes.
The Moratorium That Could Set a Trend
New York is not one of the states with the most data centers, like Virginia or Texas, but it had a queue of projects waiting to connect to the power grid. Some of these projects were already facing local resistance. Hochul has not yet signed the law, but her team has already described it as "complicated." In the meantime, she has committed to leading the creation of the strongest standards in the country for the development of data centers. The idea is that when companies thrive in New York, New Yorkers will also benefit.
The moratorium could serve as a model for other state bans. New York's move is seen as a significant setback for artificial intelligence companies that were previously courted by politicians seeking investments. Maine attempted something similar, but the governor vetoed the proposal for not exempting a specific project. Hochul, on the other hand, is firm in her position that industry growth needs to be responsible, especially in a state where electricity prices are among the highest in the U.S.
