Perplexity AI: Transforming Interaction with Personal Computers

Perplexity brings its AI agent to Windows

Perplexity has started rolling out Personal Computer to Windows users. The tool works as an AI agent that can access local files, interact with applications, and search the web to complete tasks.

The difference from a traditional chatbot is straightforward. Instead of only explaining how to do something, the agent can act inside the computer after receiving the required permissions.

It can find documents, organize folders, update spreadsheets, or combine information from different files to create a presentation. The tool can also work with Microsoft 365 apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneDrive.

The computer is no longer just where the conversation happens.

Perplexity says Personal Computer asks for confirmation before performing sensitive actions, such as sending an email or deleting a file. Users can also follow the process and stop the agent when necessary.

That level of control matters. A chatbot mistake may produce an incorrect answer. An agent mistake could change or delete real information stored on the computer.

Personal Computer is initially available to Max and Enterprise Max subscribers. The Max plan starts at $200 per month, which currently positions the product mainly toward professionals and businesses.

By bringing the agent to Windows, Perplexity is entering a competition that goes beyond producing the best answers. The next challenge is building an AI that can leave the chat window and perform real work inside the computer.
