OpenAI Launches ChatGPT with a Focus on Safety for Teens
After facing a series of lawsuits due to the lack of safety measures in its AI chatbots, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT for Teens. The new version promises to include additional protections, as well as address the issue of school cheating facilitated by AI.
The big news is the study mode, which aims to transform the way teenagers interact with the chatbot. Instead of simply providing quick answers, ChatGPT for Teens wants to stimulate curiosity and learning. The idea is that teenagers receive guiding questions and step-by-step support to understand the material. If the system detects that the user is trying to cheat, it suggests using the study mode.
Education and Safety: A Delicate Balance
The app also offers quizzes, learning visualizations, and controls that allow parents to decide when the study mode should be activated by default. All of this sounds great on paper, but the question is: will teenagers, masters at circumventing parental controls, find loopholes in this new system?
The curious point is why these protections were not present from the beginning of ChatGPT. The chatbot was launched in late 2022 and quickly reached 900 million weekly users before considering specific safeguards for teenagers. Now, OpenAI claims that the appropriate protections for the app will be enabled by default in ChatGPT for Teens, based on the company's Principles for Minors Under 18, which they say are grounded in developmental science and expert guidance.
Partnership for Learning About AI
In addition to the safety measures, OpenAI announced a partnership with CodeAI to help teenagers learn more about artificial intelligence: how it works, how to direct or question it, and how to use it effectively. In the classroom, OpenAI already offers ChatGPT for Teachers, allowing schools to have managed access to AI and support.
The initiative is an important step, but it remains to be seen how these measures will be received and, more importantly, if they will be effective. OpenAI is trying to balance innovation with responsibility, but only time will tell if this new version of ChatGPT will truly make a difference in the lives of teenagers.
Ultimately, OpenAI seems to be recognizing that when it comes to teenagers, it is not enough to just offer technology. It is necessary to ensure that it is used safely and educationally. That is the point.
