Claude Sonnet 5: The New Era of Agentic AI
Claude Sonnet 5 has arrived to redefine what we expect from agentic AI. Imagine an artificial intelligence that not only makes plans but also autonomously uses tools like browsers and terminals. All of this with a performance that, until recently, was only possible with larger and more expensive models. For many developers, the era of agentic AI began with the Sonnet models, such as Claude Sonnet 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7, which already demonstrated impressive skills in coding and tool usage. But now, Sonnet 5 is here to bridge the gap with the Opus models, offering performance close to Opus 4.8, but at more affordable prices.
Sonnet 5: Performance and Safety
Sonnet 5 is a significant advancement over its predecessor, Sonnet 4.6, especially in crucial aspects such as reasoning, tool usage, coding, and knowledge work. It is safer and exhibits fewer undesirable behaviors than Sonnet 4.6, although it still does not reach the safety level of the Opus models. Starting today, Sonnet 5 is available in all plans, from Free to Enterprise, and also on Claude Code and the Claude Platform. With introductory prices until August 31, 2026, it offers an attractive cost-benefit for developers seeking quality without breaking the budget.
Feedback from Early Users
The first partners with access to Sonnet 5 were unanimous: it is much more agentic than its predecessors. Testers reported that it completes complex tasks where previous models failed, checks its own output without being prompted, and does all of this at an attractive price. Claude Sonnet 5 offers a robust execution layer for multi-step software engineering tasks, handling sustained coding, tool usage, and debugging well in complicated technical contexts.
Safety and Efficiency
Pre-launch safety evaluations showed that Sonnet 5 is an overall improvement over Sonnet 4.6. It is better at refusing malicious requests and resisting attempts at hijacking in prompt injection attacks. While it shows lower rates of hallucination and flattery, it still presents some higher rates of misaligned behavior compared to Opus 4.8 and Claude Mythos Preview. However,
