Spotify Labels AI-Generated Artists and Adjusts Recommendations
Spotify is taking a clear stance regarding artists generated by artificial intelligence. From now on, the platform will identify these artists with a label of "AI Persona" and exclude their music from editorial and algorithmic recommendations. This decision, announced recently, aims to balance the innovation provided by AI with the quality of content offered to users.
In mid-September, Spotify users will start seeing "AI Persona" badges on some artist profiles. These labels indicate that the artist's identity is generated by AI, rather than representing a real person. Although Spotify allows artists to identify themselves as AI Personas, the company will not rely solely on this self-identification. They will review artist profiles, especially those that have already reached a certain level of audience, to ensure that the most listened to are covered first.
Innovation vs. Quality
The interesting detail is that, even with the "AI Persona" label, the music of these artists will not be included in users' personalized recommendations unless someone explicitly decides to follow an AI-generated artist. This means that while Spotify is open to innovations, it is also aware of the risk of flooding the platform with low-quality content, something that could harm the user experience and even lead to subscription cancellations.
Spotify's current policy already prohibits unauthorized voice clones and deepfakes, while seeking ways to integrate AI tools, such as prompt-generated playlists and virtual DJs, without compromising content authenticity. This distinction is crucial, as Spotify's focus is to promote music from authentic artists who are building careers in the industry.
Artistic Identity in Focus
Spotify has made it clear that the "AI Persona" label is an assessment of the artist's profile, not the music itself. The company recognizes that there is a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool. But the central question is whether the profile represents a real human being. To help users differentiate between AI Personas and AI-generated remixes or covers, which will be allowed under new licensing agreements with record labels, Spotify also plans to launch a tool that will allow users to report profiles that appear to be AI-generated but have not yet been labeled.
Paths for AI-Generated Music
Artists will soon be able to start identifying themselves as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists, and the labels will begin appearing next month. This measure helps maintain transparency on the platform and reflects Spotify's commitment to elevating music from authentic artists.
Ultimately, Spotify is trying to find a middle ground. It wants to leverage the advantages of AI without losing sight of what truly matters: authentic music that resonates with people. And in this process, the platform is making it clear that while AI can be a powerful tool, the essence of music still resides in human creativity.
