SpaceX and the Pentagon: A New Frontier in Computing
Elon Musk is making another bold move. SpaceX, already a strong name in rocket launches and satellite communication, is now in talks to provide computational power to the U.S. Department of Defense. The Wall Street Journal revealed that the idea is to use the capacity of SpaceX's data centers to run artificial intelligence models, something that could be worth billions of dollars. This would not only expand the existing partnership between SpaceX and the Pentagon but also put Musk in direct competition with neocloud companies like CoreWeave, offering computational capacity at lower prices for AI customers.
The Department of Defense, like many large companies, is seeking more cloud computing capacity to support its intelligence agencies and military AI applications. Last year, Amazon announced an investment of up to $50 billion to expand its AI and supercomputing capacity for the U.S. government. Negotiations between SpaceX and the Pentagon are still ongoing and may not materialize. Neither SpaceX nor the Pentagon has commented on the matter, and Reuters was unable to independently verify the report.
The Race for Computational Power is Heating Up
SpaceX is no stranger to closing deals of this kind. In June, the company signed a multi-year cloud services contract with Google, securing access to about 110,000 Nvidia chips and related computing infrastructure. And in May, Anthropic announced it would use all the computational capacity of SpaceX's Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, adding 300 megawatts of new capacity.
The competition for computational power is heating up, and Musk seems determined not to fall behind. The search for more cloud computing capacity is not just a trend but a growing necessity in a world where artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly central to military and intelligence operations.
