Siri AI may have a paid version for those who want more
Apple is considering putting a paywall on Siri AI for users who demand more. During his latest earnings conference as CEO of Apple, Tim Cook revealed that the anticipated update to Siri AI may come with certain paid limitations. Although these plans are not yet finalized, Cook envisions that users will be able to purchase more processing capacity for Siri AI through iCloud+ subscriptions, which already offer extended cloud storage.
Cook explained that he believes there will be people interested in using Siri AI intensively. Therefore, the company plans to offer upgrade options in iCloud+, allowing users to "buy more space" on the platform. He did not hide his enthusiasm for the potential of Siri AI. This aligns Apple with other AI providers, such as Anthropic and OpenAI, which offer limited free versions with the option to upgrade for greater use.
The challenge of keeping Siri competitive
The new Siri AI is already available in the beta version of iOS 27 and is expected to be widely released in the fall. With Cook's departure, John Ternus, the former Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, takes the helm at Apple at a crucial time. The company has fallen behind in the race for an advanced AI assistant, even going so far as to license a custom Gemini model from Google to enhance Siri.
The delay in updating Siri AI has cost Apple dearly. The company had to shell out $250 million to settle a class-action lawsuit over how it promoted the AI capabilities of the iPhone 16. This is an expensive lesson about the importance of delivering on technological promises.
Impacts on the hardware market
Apple, like other hardware manufacturers, is facing difficulties in obtaining the necessary supplies to meet customer demand. The AI-driven RAM shortage has made hardware manufacturing more expensive, forcing companies like Meta, Samsung, Microsoft, and Sony to raise prices on some devices. Apple has already increased prices on Macs and iPads, but has yet to adjust the cost of existing iPhone models.
The technology market is undergoing a transformation, and Apple needs to adapt quickly to avoid losing ground. Introducing a paid model for Siri AI could be a strategy to maintain competitiveness and meet the demands of more discerning users. Meanwhile, consumers are eagerly awaiting to see how these changes will affect their daily use of technology.
