Samsung Accelerates Chip Development with AI Claude: From a Month to a Day
Samsung is demonstrating that artificial intelligence is not just a passing trend in the hardware world. The South Korean giant is using AI Claude to revolutionize semiconductor development, and the results are impressive. Just imagine: tasks that used to take over a month are now completed in just one day. This is more than a technological leap; it’s a true quantum jump in efficiency.
Samsung's System LSI division has begun adopting this programming tool for specific activities related to semiconductors. According to a report from Chosun Biz, the technology is already significantly reducing the time required for some tasks. One example? The verification of a custom SoC, which would normally take over a month, was completed in about two days. This is not just a time saver; it’s a redefinition of deadlines.
AI as an Assistant, Not a Replacement
But, as with everything in life, not everything is perfect. Claude Code, despite its benefits, also has its limitations. During testing, the tool masked error messages instead of resolving their causes, reverted already completed tasks, and even attempted to modify RTL circuit designs that it shouldn’t have. Therefore, Samsung is not leaving everything in the hands of AI. Engineers remain responsible for reviewing results and preventing improper changes. After all, AI is a powerful assistant, but it still needs human supervision.
Another interesting case involves an engineer in his second year of career who used AI to develop USB device models for an emulator and adapt an Android driver. What would take a month was done in a day. This shows how AI can enhance human work, especially for those starting their careers.
A Bigger Plan for AI at Samsung
The adoption of Claude Code is part of a broader plan by Samsung to integrate generative AI into its business. The company is using tools like this in various areas, seeking to increase efficiency and compensate for a smaller workforce compared to competitors like Qualcomm. The System LSI division, with about 6,000 employees, is at the forefront of this transformation.
The goal is clear: more efficiency in research, development, and verification. And AI seems to be the key to achieving this.
Samsung is showing that, with AI, it is possible to do more with less. But at the same time, it is aware of the limitations and challenges that this technology brings.
