Prometheus: Jeff Bezos's New Venture in Physical AI
Jeff Bezos is back in the spotlight with Prometheus, a startup that promises to redefine the concept of "physical AI". But what does that really mean? We are talking about applying deep learning principles, which we already know from language models and generative AI, to fields like robotics and manufacturing. With a significant investment, Bezos and his co-founder Vik Bajaj are ready to dive headfirst into this area.
Prometheus has already secured an impressive amount: $12 billion in its latest funding round, adding to the initial $6.2 billion. This raises the company's valuation to $41 billion. Big names like JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock are on board, in addition to a large chunk from Bezos himself. The initial focus? Investing heavily in computational capacity, which is essential for generating data on a large scale.
The Vision of an "Artificial General Engineer"
Bezos has a clear vision: to create an "artificial general engineer". He believes that all social wealth comes from invention. From the plow to the steam engine, every innovation has made us richer. Prometheus wants to accelerate this cycle of invention by providing tools that make it easier to create new technologies. The goal is to generate civilizational wealth, not just individual profit.
Vik Bajaj, co-founder, complements this vision with a pragmatic touch. He highlights that developing new technologies is one of humanity's most complex challenges, requiring the collaboration of thousands of creative minds. Engineers, according to him, still use tools that haven't evolved in decades. Prometheus wants to change this, providing instruments that streamline the creative process.
Prometheus and the Competitive Landscape
In addition to their own innovations, Bezos and Bajaj are raising a $100 billion fund to invest in companies that can benefit from Prometheus's advances. This includes other Bezos ventures, like Blue Origin. Although it is still early and no specific product has been announced, Prometheus already stands out in the physical AI competitive landscape.
