OpenAI strengthens ties with Brazil and expands partnerships
OpenAI, famous for ChatGPT, is reinforcing its presence in Brazil with a series of partnerships and strategic investments. The company announced collaborations with renowned institutions and initiatives that promise not only to expand its operations but also to boost research in crucial areas such as mathematics and health.
Brazil is already one of the largest users of ChatGPT, with about 215 million messages sent daily. This places the country on the global podium, behind only the United States and India. And OpenAI seems determined to take advantage of this growing popularity. The company has formed partnerships with the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA), the city of São Paulo, the legal startup ENTER, and the Estímulo program aimed at small entrepreneurs.
Partnerships and expansion
During an event in São Paulo, representatives from OpenAI discussed their strategies for Brazil. Jason Kwon, strategy director, emphasized that the company is committed to ensuring broad access to technology and expanding local partnerships. This includes agreements with banks and operators, as well as an expanded partnership with Rappi, which offers free access to ChatGPT Go for eligible customers.
OpenAI is not only interested in commercial partnerships but also in supporting academic research. The company announced that it will fund two research projects in Brazil, one at the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) and another at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da USP (HCFMUSP). Both projects are part of an international program that will distribute $1 million in funding and credits on the ChatGPT API.
Investment in research
Support for research is an essential component of OpenAI's strategy in Brazil. The project at IMPA seeks to understand how scientific institutions can convert access to AI into concrete advancements, while the project at HCFMUSP will explore the use of AI in clinical infrastructure in the SUS, always maintaining human oversight.
These initiatives are part of a group of 14 global projects that will receive funding and technical support. The results of this research are expected to be released in 2027, and the expectation is that they will bring valuable insights into the application of AI in real-world contexts.
OpenAI is clearly betting on Brazil as a key market for its global expansion. With a growing user base and strategic partnerships, the company is well-positioned to influence the future of artificial intelligence in the country.
