Opal and the New Audio Gadget with Artificial Intelligence

Opal, the San Francisco startup that became known for its sleek webcams, is reinventing itself. With a financial boost from OpenAI and Samsung, the company is diving into the world of artificial intelligence audio gadgets. Opal, now named Opal Electronics, wants to be the Sony of the 21st century, focusing not just on technology, but also on design and culture.

This transformation was made possible by a $40 million investment led by OpenAI. The deal closed in early 2025, although rumors had started in 2024. Other investors include Samsung, Peter Thiel, Alexis Ohanian's venture capital firm Seven Seven Six, and the famous tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD. With this, Opal is now valued at around $275 million.

The history between Opal and OpenAI is interesting. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, was a fan of Opal's C1 webcam. So much so that in 2022, he and his team visited Opal to discuss the possibility of running OpenAI's Whisper model locally on Opal's cameras for live captioning on Zoom. At the end of that meeting, the OpenAI team gave a sneak peek of ChatGPT, which impacted Opal so much that the company decided to transform itself into a research lab.

Since then, Opal has been developing an AI-powered audio product, set to launch in the next three to four months. Sam Altman, OpenAI researchers, and executives from companies like xAI and Anthropic are already testing the device. While it's still unclear if the product is a wearable, we know it does not intend to compete with the iPhone.

Opal's partnership with a specific AI lab remains a mystery, but the company is in talks with OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI to allow users to choose the AI model they prefer. In addition, Opal plans to launch two more products in the next 12 months.

Opal was not in trouble when it decided to pivot. By 2023, the company had already sold over 50,000 webcams. With a team that grew from five to twelve people, Opal manufactures its products in Taiwan. Unlike other companies that failed trying to launch hardware running language models, Opal takes a more cautious approach, under-promising and over-delivering.
