Nubank transforms hiring with a focus on AI
Nubank is changing the way it hires, but it is not slowing down. Instead, the company is focusing on candidates with an "AI mindset." Ellen Kiss, director of Nubank's Design Excellence Center, highlighted this during Figma's Config conference in San Francisco. According to her, artificial intelligence is no longer just a tool, but a central part of the bank's strategy. This means that the profile of new hires needs to align with this vision.
AI is so integrated into Nubank that it influences everything from hiring to rewards and performance evaluations. The idea is that technology becomes a vital component in company management. This change is not random. Nubank has already transformed design and technology into its competitive advantage, serving more than 118 million customers in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. To maintain this expansion, the bank developed NuDS, its design system, entirely within Figma.
An operation designed for scale
NuDS is a clear example of how Nubank is using technology to scale its operations. With more than 200 designers working on the tool, the system brings together more than 100 reusable components and around 320,000 lines of code. The integration between design and engineering is so deep that 80% of the application's screens are already aligned with NuDS. This not only increases efficiency, but also improves internal satisfaction, which doubled in one year.
Changes that previously took weeks are now made in a single work cycle. The company was able to implement a new visual identity for business accounts in just one sprint. This is crucial to ensuring a consistent experience across markets. AI is advancing on this solid foundation. Nubank is testing Figma Make, an AI-based design tool, to speed up prototyping and validation with users.
AI redefines design at Nubank
Consolidating the design flow into a single AI-powered environment can transform the way Nubank researches and tests ideas. This is part of a larger trend where code becomes designer material, a concept that may scare some developers. But for Figma CEO Dylan Field, it represents a new era of creativity and design. He discussed this thesis at Config 2026, emphasizing that AI is changing the game in design.
