Brazil injects R$ 2.3 billion to boost national AI
Brazil is about to make a significant leap in the global technological race. With a robust investment of R$ 2.3 billion, the federal government announced an ambitious plan to develop the national artificial intelligence infrastructure. This initiative is not just about technology; it is a strategic move to ensure the country's digital sovereignty and reduce dependence on foreign technologies.
The project, which was presented at a ceremony in Rio Grande do Norte, features the presence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The idea is to divide the resources between partnerships with technology giants from the United States and China, as well as to cooperate with Spain in semiconductor production. The goal is clear: to ensure that Brazilian data, generated by public and private services, remains under national control.
Strategic allocation of resources
The government has carefully planned the allocation of resources. About R$ 1.3 billion will be allocated to a supercomputing project in Rio de Janeiro, in collaboration with Chinese companies Huawei and iFlytek. The expectation is that this structure will start operating in July 2027, focusing on the development of large language models and training approximately 3,000 professionals.
Another billion reais will be allocated, through a bidding process, for the acquisition of a supercomputer that promises to be among the ten most powerful in the world. This equipment will be installed at the Augusto Severo Technology Park in Macaíba, Rio Grande do Norte, and will be managed by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing.
The expectation is that the bidding process will take three to six months. If everything goes well, without legal challenges, the supercomputer should be operational in 12 to 18 months. And, according to rumors, Nvidia is the favorite to win this competition.
A leap in computational power
The new supercomputer promises to be a game changer. With a processing capacity of 7.2 thousand Petaflops, it will be almost 20 times more powerful than the current Brazilian supercomputer, Santos Dumont, located in Petrópolis. This means that tasks that today would take years could be completed in a matter of months.
In practice, this power will allow large-scale language models, such as GPT-4, to be trained in just one month. This infrastructure will be available not only to the government but also to companies, universities, and scientific research institutions. It is an advancement that places Brazil on a new level in the global AI arena.
What else is in the package?
The government's plan does not stop there. There is a third long-term route focused on the open-source architecture RISC-V, with implementation expected within 15 years. The idea is to transform Brazil into a relevant producer of semiconductor technologies.
Additionally, the package includes the development of a national cloud computing service and data storage exclusively on national territory. To ensure the security and ethics of these technologies, the National Center for Algorithmic Transparency and Trustworthy AI will be created, operated by the Federal University of Minas Gerais. This center will have the mission of auditing systems, assessing risks, and creating transparency methodologies.
This billion-dollar investment in AI is not just about technology. It is a declaration of digital independence and a bold step to place Brazil at the forefront of global innovation. The challenge now is to ensure that these plans move from paper to reality. The world is watching.
