Google Brings Leaders Together to Discuss AI in Education
In New York, educators and industry leaders met at Google’s headquarters to discuss the future of artificial intelligence in classrooms. The event, held in partnership with the New York Jobs CEO Council and the Urban Assembly, brought together 150 leaders from education and industry. The goal was clear: to promote knowledge exchange between those hiring for the future and those teaching for it.
Practical sessions, such as aiEDU's "Vibe Coding" and Google’s "Meet LEA," demonstrated how tools like Google AI mode and NotebookLM can spark curiosity and build AI literacy. A central theme emerged: the true impact of AI lies in the problem-solving capabilities it enables. While technology optimizes workflows, human skills, such as adaptability and critical judgment, become essential.
The Importance of Human Skills in the Age of AI
During the event, industry leaders emphasized that despite technological advancements, we cannot forgo human skills. Adaptability, collaboration, and critical judgment are increasingly valued. Technology can streamline processes, but it is these competencies that ensure professionals stand out. Additionally, participants agreed that it is crucial to maintain an unwavering commitment to privacy and equitable access.
Jane Martínez Dowling, head of Student Pathways at New York City Public Schools, and Steven Butschi from Google shared industry insights in a conversation moderated by Urban Assembly CEO David Adams. Group discussions, such as the one on vibe coding, reinforced the idea that technological innovation should happen with schools, not around them.
Technology and Education: A Necessary Partnership
The event also featured real-time demonstrations, such as Google Search Live, showcasing the potential of new technologies. Tequila Lamar from Google opened the event by highlighting the importance of integrating technology into teaching. The message was clear: to prepare the next generation, technological innovation must be an ally of schools.
