CEOs shift stance on AI and unemployment: hype or strategy?

Tech bosses, such as those at Nvidia and OpenAI, are revising their alarmist predictions about artificial intelligence and unemployment. They now say that the apocalyptic warnings were, in fact, somewhat exaggerated or even opportunistic. This change of tone is no accident. It comes at a time when the public is resisting changes in the job market and major companies are preparing for initial public offerings (IPOs).

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, criticized other leaders who used AI as a scapegoat for layoffs. In an interview with Channel News Asia, he stated that associating AI with job loss is an overly convenient narrative. "It's a way for them to look smart, and I deeply dislike it," Huang said. He pointed out that the technology only recently became truly useful. Still, some companies, like Snapchat's parent company, still use automation as a justification for job cuts.

Sam Altman, from OpenAI, also joined the dance. During a conference in Sydney, he admitted his predictions about AI's impact on the job market were wrong. "I thought we would have seen a larger impact on entry-level executive roles than we actually did," Altman stated. He revised his expectations and now understands better why it didn't happen.

Meanwhile, Dario Amodei, from Anthropic, softened his stance by predicting that even with 90% automation, the remaining 10% of human workers would be much more productive with technological support. This moderation in tone occurs strategically as OpenAI and Anthropic plan their potential IPOs.

But the debate over the future of employment is still far from over. Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook warned that early job losses could precede the promised economic gains. It seems we are on the verge of a reorganization of work not seen in generations. What lies ahead? Only time will tell.
