Anthropic and Samsung may create a chip that shakes up the market
Anthropic is in talks with Samsung to develop a custom chip. The idea, which emerged in April when Reuters reported that the company was considering creating its own AI chips to tackle the market shortage, is now gaining momentum. Last Thursday, The Information revealed that negotiations are progressing, but there are still uncertainties about how this chip will be used, its integration into servers, and its processing power.
When questioned, Anthropic stated that a diversified hardware strategy, with chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia, will remain essential for its operations. Regarding the partnership with Samsung, the company preferred not to comment further. The move to create custom chips is not exclusive to Anthropic. Many AI companies are seeking this independence to perform specific tasks and move away from reliance on Nvidia, which dominates the sector.
And it's not just Anthropic that is eyeing this market. Recently, OpenAI announced a partnership with Broadcom to develop its own inference processor, called "Jalapeño," which promises superior efficiency in performance per watt. Amazon and Google also offer their own custom TPUs in their cloud solutions. Samsung, in turn, is already a strong name in the AI industry, collaborating with Nvidia in the production of chips necessary to train and run AI models.
Samsung and Nvidia are even building an AI chip factory in South Korea. Additionally, Samsung has already discussed potential collaborations with Google to expand its chip manufacturing efforts.
What is at stake here is the capacity for innovation and technological independence. The race for custom chips is not just a matter of computing power, but also of market strategy. Companies want to differentiate themselves and ensure they are not held hostage by a single supplier. For Anthropic, this partnership with Samsung could be a crucial step in standing out in an increasingly competitive market.
The question remains: how far can this partnership take Anthropic? If successful, it could change the dynamics of the AI market, offering alternatives to the already established giants. And, of course, this could mean more options and innovation for all of us. Let’s wait for the next chapters of this story that promises to shake up the tech sector.
