Ex-GitHub CEO Challenges with New Platform for the Era of Vibe Coding
Imagine a world where even GitHub, the giant of version control, is struggling to cope with the demand from AI agents. Well, that world has arrived. Thomas Dohmke, former CEO of GitHub, has decided to launch his own Git hosting network to meet this new reality. His company is called Entire, and the idea is to offer a "completely new" Git hosting network, adapted for a scenario where AI agents are the primary code creators.
Git, the version control system, has always been seen as an unshakable pillar, used by about 93.87% of developers. However, GitHub, which is Microsoft's Git hosting platform, has been facing issues due to the infrastructure pressure caused by the proliferation of AI agent interactions. Dohmke acknowledges that the solution proposed by his company, decentralization, was already part of Git's original design. But what Entire really wants to fix are the code hosting platforms that were not built to accommodate AI agents.
Git was always designed to be decentralized, with each clone containing a complete copy of the repository and its history. This allows the software to be replicated across many hosts, rather than being controlled by a single server. But in practice, Git hosting platforms have led developers to centralized systems. This worked until AI agents entered the game.
The New Git Hosting Proposal
Entire.io, in its initial form, allows developers to mirror their public or private repositories from GitHub. This creates a parallel universe where AI agents can explore the code hosted on Entire without overloading GitHub's resources, which may be needed for actual deployments. Users can also choose to rely exclusively on Entire's native branches.
The differentiator of Entire.io is the integration with Entire CLI, a tool that collects AI agent sessions along with code commits. It integrates into your workflow to track prompts, responses, file changes, and other contexts of AI coding agents. This allows understanding not only what changed but why.
