OpenAI transforms ChatGPT into a superapp: Is chat really dead?
If you thought ChatGPT was already top-notch, brace yourself for the transformation. OpenAI is about to shift gears with its famous chatbot, which is now turning into a sort of "superapp." The idea is to integrate coding tools and artificial intelligence agents, all while the company prepares to go public. It seems traditional chat's days are numbered, at least that's what they say over there.
OpenAI, valued at a modest 850 billion dollars, is searching for new ways to grow. And rightly so, as competition with rivals like Anthropic gets increasingly fierce. The strategy is clear: stop being just a chatbot that answers questions and become an agent that actually does things for you. Imagine a personal assistant that organizes your life, from work to leisure. That's what they are aiming for.
ChatGPT, which has already won over nearly 1 billion users, will serve as a gateway to more sophisticated products. Most people use the chatbot for free, but OpenAI wants to change that and boost its revenues. The transformation will begin to appear on the ChatGPT website and mobile apps, encouraging users to explore coding tools, image generation, and partner apps like Canva and Booking.com.
And that's not all. OpenAI is reorganizing its teams, uniting ChatGPT, Codex, and other products under a single leadership. The focus now is on winning enterprise clients, meaning some consumer-facing initiatives have been sidelined. For instance, an in-ChatGPT checkout feature was disabled, and Sora, a video generation product, was also shut down.
OpenAI's vision is that, in the future, we will interact with a single AI assistant, instead of using a collection of separate apps. When artificial general intelligence finally arrives, the idea is that there won't be many distinct brands. It will just be one entity capable of doing everything you need. It sounds like science fiction, but it is the future OpenAI is trying to build.
