Bill for Smart Glasses Gains Traction in the Chamber

Smart glasses, which look like something straight out of a science fiction movie, are about to gain an important chapter in Brazilian legislation. A bill seeking to regulate the use of these devices has advanced in the Chamber of Deputies. The proposal has already been approved by the Transport and Transit Commission and now heads to the Science, Technology, and Innovation Commission.

Deputy Carlos Zarattini, of the PT from São Paulo, is the author of this initiative. He raises an important banner: smart glasses, with their capabilities for discrete and continuous capture of images and sounds, can threaten fundamental rights such as privacy and public safety. Imagine someone using these glasses to film you without you realizing it. This is exactly the kind of situation the bill wants to avoid.

The proposal suggests some very specific measures. First, that the glasses clearly indicate when they are recording, whether by visual or audible signals. In addition, features like facial recognition and biometrics should be blocked by default unless a specific law allows. And there's more: using these devices in places like restrooms and hospitals is out of the question unless prior authorization is granted. For drivers, the rule is clear: using AI glasses while driving can be considered a very serious traffic violation if it compromises attention at the wheel.

A recent amendment to the bill brought an interesting change. Instead of completely banning the use of the glasses, the focus now is to prevent them from blocking the driver's vision. This seems like a more pragmatic adjustment, doesn't it? The proposal was well-received and is already in the hands of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Commission. Technology advances fast, but legislation needs to catch up to ensure our rights are always protected.
