Anthropic releases Claude Fable 5 after US decision
Anthropic has globally released Claude Fable 5 after the US government lifted export restrictions. The model was under a ban due to security concerns related to a potential "jailbreak," which could turn it into a tool for cyberattacks. To address this, Anthropic implemented a security classifier that blocks such behavior.
Now, Claude Fable 5 is available on various platforms, including web, Claude Platform, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. However, there is a 50% control on the weekly usage limit until July 7. Access via AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry is still pending but is expected to be reactivated soon. Meanwhile, the even more advanced Claude Mythos 5 remains restricted to companies in the Glasswing program, such as Amazon and Google.
Security was the reason for the Fable 5 ban. In June, the US Department of Commerce imposed an export control, prohibiting use by foreigners. Anthropic argued that it would be impossible to verify users' nationality, leading to widespread suspension. Amazon demonstrated to the government that it was possible to perform a "jailbreak" on the models, allowing access to third-party source codes and identifying security flaws, which could result in large-scale attacks.
The collaboration that ensured the release
Anthropic worked alongside the US government and partners, such as Amazon, to resolve the issue. As a result, they implemented a security classifier that blocks over 99% of exploitation attempts. In the remaining cases, the information provided is insufficient to cause harm. Collaboration with the US government continues, with early access to models and safeguards for evaluation.
Additionally, Anthropic is developing a framework to assess and respond to "jailbreaks." Companies in the Glasswing project are involved in this discussion. Meanwhile, routine tasks such as code generation and bug checking will be directed to Opus 4.8. This is not expected to change in the short term. Although Mythos 5 is more skilled at finding vulnerabilities, Fable 5 has stricter security protections.
