Video games are the new bet for training AI

General Intuition, a New York startup backed by none other than Jeff Bezos, bets that game data could be the key to the next big leap in physical AI. The company, which recently raised $320 million, believes that world models trained on game data can transform how AI understands the physical world.
The connection between games and physical AI
Pim de Witte, CEO of General Intuition, explains that the company emerged from Medal TV, a gaming platform. He believes that game data offers a wealth of information about how objects interact and move, something that language models simply cannot capture. Imagine a racing game: it not only simulates cars at high speeds but also how they react to collisions, turns, and different surfaces. These simulations are a goldmine for training AI in complex and dynamic scenarios.
Moreover, games provide a controlled and repeatable environment, ideal for training AI algorithms. Unlike the internet, where information is vast but disorganized, games have clear rules and immediate feedback. This allows AI to learn more efficiently and accurately. However, this approach is not without ethical challenges. De Witte acknowledges that when training AI with game data, care must be taken to ensure that these technologies are not used for undesirable purposes, such as military applications.

General Intuition's bet on game data could redefine the path for artificial intelligence. While many focus on improving language models, the company is looking at the physical world, where AI still has much to learn.
