When AI Giants Stumble Together
On Thursday morning, a rare phenomenon shook the world of artificial intelligence: four of the largest AI models, operated by OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google, faced significant service interruptions at the same time. It was as if the tech titans had coordinated a coffee break, leaving users and businesses on high alert.
Anthropic was the first to report issues, with a "partial outage" in the Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5 models at 9:23 AM (Eastern Time). Within just 15 minutes, the company identified the cause, and around 12:16 PM, announced that everything was resolved. But that wasn't all: another incident affected Claude Sonnet 5 shortly after noon.
Meanwhile, OpenAI was also facing its own turbulence. Elevated errors in ChatGPT and Codex resulted in "degraded performance" starting at 10:43 AM. Fortunately, a fix was implemented just over half an hour later, and everything returned to normal around 12:55 PM.
The Domino Effect of Failures
The situation for xAI was a bit more complicated. The Grok model displayed an error message to users, indicating they were "working to restore service as quickly as possible." User reports on DownDetector about Grok surged from fewer than 10 before 9 AM to 1,365 by 9:45 AM, dropping to 273 at the time of writing.
As for Google, with its Gemini model, no official statement was made, but issues were noted. Reports on DownDetector rose from 23 at 10:30 AM to 412 shortly after 11 AM. Data from StatusGator indicated a "likely outage" of the Gemini API between 10:45 AM and 11:15 AM, before everything returned to normal.
Interestingly, other internet services, such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Cloudflare, did not report significant issues, although they saw an increase in problem reports on DownDetector.
The Rarity of Four Giants Falling
Seeing all these cutting-edge models facing simultaneous outages is something practically unprecedented. Anthropic, for example, maintains a 99.4% uptime over the last 90 days, with the last similar outage occurring on August 24. OpenAI reports 99.63% uptime for ChatGPT and 100% for ChatGPT Codex in the same period. On August 31, ChatGPT experienced a period of "elevated latency" that lasted for hours.
What makes this event even more intriguing is the hypothesis of a "domino effect." Tibo from OpenAI suggests that many users have backup providers, and the stress can spread like contagion. It’s as if a small stumble triggered a chain reaction, affecting major AI models all at once.
In the end, what we learn from this situation is that even tech giants, with their promises of near-perfect uptime, are not immune to failures. And when they stumble, the impact is felt throughout the digital ecosystem. The lesson remains: even the most advanced machines need a bit of maintenance every now and then.
