Anthropic has just launched Opus 5, the new generation of its advanced artificial intelligence. This model, although smaller than Fable 5, promises to be more accessible and less restrictive, which could make it the preferred choice in various situations. Interestingly, Opus 5 outperforms Fable 5 in several disclosed benchmarks. And guess what, it arrives just two months after Opus 4.8, which was released in May.

The series 5 is on the rise, with Mythos 5, Fable 5, and Sonnet 5 already available since June. Only the lightweight model, Haiku, is still awaiting its update. Anthropic highlighted that Opus 5 is "much stronger at verifying its own work and iterating carefully until it succeeds." An example of this was the model creating its own computer vision pipeline from an incomplete prompt.

Opus 5: Fewer Restrictions, More Freedom

Opus 5 stands out for not having many of the restrictions that troubled Fable since its launch. For example, it is not subject to the 30-day data retention policy, which raised concerns among users more attentive to privacy. Of course, there are still significant safeguards, especially in cybersecurity tasks, such as exploit generation and penetration testing.

Opus 5 cannot be used to scan for vulnerabilities in software binaries, but it can search for flaws in source code, a more defensive use. Anthropic's expectation is that security classifiers will be triggered 85% less in Opus 5 compared to Fable 5. This reflects a lighter approach for a less robust model.

New Tools for a Smoother Experience

To make the safeguards less intrusive, Anthropic is launching a tool that promises to soften the impact when these barriers are triggered. Users can now opt for a beta feature called Automatic Fallbacks. With it, when a prompt triggers the security classifier, the request is automatically redirected to a less powerful model.
