Microsoft may have created an operating system focused on Copilot
Microsoft continues to surprise. Project Aion, or Copilot OS, is an example of this. Although not officially confirmed yet, this experimental operating system places artificial intelligence as the protagonist. The idea is for Copilot OS to function as an alternative interface to Windows 11, but with a total focus on AI. Recently leaked images on Discord show a system that primarily runs on a web interface, using a modified version of the Edge browser.
Interestingly, instead of the traditional Start Menu, the system features a dedicated button for Copilot. This suggests that the goal is to allow Copilot to perform typical chatbot tasks, such as answering questions or executing specific tasks, in addition to providing access to necessary resources for the user. However, Project Aion seems to prioritize web applications, with no support for traditional Windows applications. This is because it is said to have been developed with a minimalist interface framework called Win3, which leaves aside legacy features.
An experiment that may never see the light of day
The big question is: will Project Aion ever be released? So far, Microsoft has not confirmed the existence of the project, and it is common for companies like it to develop experimental systems that never reach the public. The goal may simply be to test new ideas or validate concepts. It seems that Project Aion has not evolved since 2024, which suggests that the experiment has been halted.
There is also the possibility that Aion served as a reference for Project Solara, presented at Build 2026. Solara aims to control devices running AI agents, but is based on Android code. None of this is confirmed, but curiosity about Aion remains.
The impact of artificial intelligence interfaces
Even if Project Aion never reaches the market, it makes us think about the impact of artificial intelligence interfaces. The idea of an operating system that places AI at the center of everything is intriguing. Imagine an environment where Copilot not only assists with tasks but also adapts to your usage style, anticipating needs and offering solutions even before you ask.
