Perplexity has taken a bold step by launching the Portable Computer, an artificial intelligence agent that runs directly on the user's hardware. This approach promises to revolutionize the way we handle AI, eliminating dependence on the cloud and preserving data privacy. The detail is that by processing everything locally, the need to pay for credits or tokens disappears, which can be a relief for many.
The idea behind the Portable Computer is simple yet powerful: bring all the workload to the user's computer. This means that sensitive files are protected and the costs associated with using external servers are cut. But, of course, there is a price to pay in terms of hardware. To run this technological marvel, you will need a robust machine, with at least an RTX 3090 graphics card. It's not for everyone.

The corporate market is becoming increasingly demanding, seeking solutions that go beyond basic chat interactions. With the Portable Computer, Perplexity meets this demand by allowing tasks to be executed locally, without additional costs for each request. According to Nate Kupp, the company's vice president of infrastructure engineering, the system "incorporates everything necessary to function locally."
And what if your hardware can't handle it? No problem. The system is smart enough to adopt a hybrid behavior, pausing the action and asking for permission to use a more powerful cloud model. The important thing is that, even in these cases, privacy is maintained: the remote model only returns text instructions, without accessing confidential documents or files.
Cutting-edge hardware and powerful integration
For those willing to invest in a high-end setup, the requirements are clear: at least 24 GB of VRAM, which means a high-performance GPU like the GeForce RTX 3090 or higher. At launch, the Portable Computer can already be configured with advanced models like the Qwen 3.8 27B or the PPLX 27B, both optimized internally.
Despite running locally, the system does not neglect integration with external applications. It easily connects to tools like Google Drive, Gmail, GitHub, and Slack, allowing the AI to extract information, analyze data, and share results autonomously. In practice, this means more efficiency and less human intervention.
Performance tests do not disappoint. The PPLX 27B model, for example, achieved an accuracy of 85.4% on the Local Knowledge Work Bench, an internal assessment by Perplexity. And all this with less processing time compared to other open architectures, such as Raspberry Pi and Hermes.
For now, the Portable Computer is only available for Linux systems and corporate accounts on Pro plans. But the expectations are high. Nvidia, for example, already sees potential to evaluate Perplexity at $30 billion. This shows that the bet on local AI is not just a trend, but a reality that can transform the market.
