Meta bets on 'AI Mode' in Facebook to revolutionize search
Meta is determined not to fall behind in the artificial intelligence race. On Monday, the social media giant announced the launch of a new feature on Facebook, "AI Mode." The idea is to transform the way users search for information, create content, and interact on the platform. With this novelty, Facebook search gets a new boost: instead of digging through results, the user can simply ask a question in natural language and receive a synthesized answer from public posts, including Groups and Reels.
This approach follows the discreet introduction of Forum, a Reddit-style app that also features its own AI tab, "Ask." Both AI Mode and Forum raise an important question: what is the reliability of answers generated from ordinary users' posts and conversations? After all, the AI is summarizing content from regular people, not verified sources. This brings the risk of outdated or misleading information, a concern already raised about Google's AI mode on Reddit.
Creative and interactive tools
In addition to improving search, Facebook now offers editing tools that allow users to play with collage cutouts and transition effects in their videos. Another novelty is the introduction of AI-powered photo presets, which allow changing the look with different clothes, hairstyles, and accessories. Imagine virtually wearing your favorite team's jersey just by tapping the "AI Edit" icon in Stories, or changing your profile picture with the "Restyle profile picture with AI" and "Wardrobe" options.
These updates add to a growing list of AI features Meta has been launching on Facebook in recent months. In February, the company introduced animated profile pictures, which bring static images to life with movements or virtual accessories. In March, an AI feature on Facebook Marketplace started automatically responding to buyers' messages on behalf of sellers. More recently, an AI assistant for creators was launched, offering personalized suggestions, like the best times to post and summaries of audience comments, based on the creator's content history and performance.
